Lewis County Animal Shelter reducing fees for adult dogs as it continues to operate near capacity

One week only: The cost of an adult dog will be dropped by half Dec.16-23

After months of operating at or near capacity, the Lewis County Animal Shelter has announced it will reduce the adoption fees for adult dogs by half from Dec. 16 to Dec. 23.

During that time — with the exception of Sunday and Monday, when the shelter is closed — the fee to adopt an adult dog will be $100, according to a news release from the county.

“The shelter has more than a dozen pups awaiting a fur-ever home for the holidays,” the news release stated. “Among them are Angus, an energetic and loving golden lab; Tinsel, a timid terrier with a sweet disposition; Eclipse, a husky/German shepherd mix with Houdini skills; and Bashful, an affectionate coonhound who is good with kids.

Event organizers hope the event will open up space for people needing to surrender their dogs.

“The Animal Shelter has been running at or near capacity for months,” Shelter Manager Joseph Henderson said. “While some dogs are getting adopted, our demand for surrenders is overwhelming right now.”
