Letter to the editor: What would Jesus do?

Posted

This question has been fluttering around since the late 60s. Most people who use this phrase mean it in a chastening way. In fact, most people who ask this question don’t have the foggiest clue what Jesus would do.

You may have noticed that it’s popular on protest signs and in public comments at our own Lewis County commissioner meetings.

Why, in this day of easy access to information, would a person need to go to a commissioner meeting to get answers about illegal trespassing into our country?

From the onset of our country, the United States has been considered the melting pot. Agree or disagree, it is what it is. There has always been a legal process for becoming a U.S. citizen. Our founders recognized that immigration from foreign countries is always welcome. They also understood that assimilating with our values is imperative.

The study of the Roman Empire may highlight some pitfalls that we need to keep in mind. The Roman Empire fell for several factors, including corrupt emperors and economic issues, civil wars, the burden of abusive taxation, inflation and constant invasions.

Does this sound familiar?

In the early 1970s, my friend from Singapore asked me to sponsor him for U.S. citizenship. For months, both of us became familiar with the history of our country, our Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence and our civic responsibility.

This culminated in a trip for Pete to go to Tacoma at the federal courthouse and receive his hard-earned quest to become a citizen of the United States of America.

There were around 100 immigrants from countries all over the world who had chosen the legal and honorable path to become citizens of our great nation. As a witness to this, I was overwhelmed with emotions as the judge lowered the gavel and declared them all citizens of the United States of America.

There was clapping, cheering and I did not notice a dry eye in the crowd.

Those who support people crossing our border illegally are foolish. It saddens me to watch our culture deteriorate to the level that Satan himself has designed. I believe that Satan inspired the “progressive movement” that has divided our country. Because of this movement, a large portion of our population has become reprobates who have no moral compass, no filter for their mouths, give no value to the lives of others, and have no knowledge that when their life on earth is over, where they will spend eternity.

John Adams wrote in a letter to the Massachusetts Militia, saying, “Our Constitution was made only for a religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” This warning from one of the founders of our constitutional republic seems to have fallen on deaf ears.

For those who genuinely want to know what Jesus would do, read all 66 books in your Bible. Be advised, you will not understand the New Testament without understanding the Old Testament.
