Letter to the editor: What will it take for America to be energy secure?

Posted

In February of this year, Donald Trump claimed that America is now “energy dominant.” He claims this dominance was a result of his policy that encourages more extraction of oil and coal while shutting down efforts to increase the use of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind energy.

I don’t think most Americans feel that we are in a dominant position with the cost of gas and diesel skyrocketing. The situation in Iran is damaging our economy. And we have no idea when it will end.

In 1973, our economy suffered dramatically when the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) limited extraction of oil to keep the price high.

As long as fossil fuels are a major source of our energy, we are vulnerable to world events such as wars and embargos.

In the long run, fossil fuels will run out. If we don’t develop other energy sources, our children are doomed to ever increasing costs and lowering supply. The sun won’t stop emitting energy throughout the universe for millions of years. The same is true for wind power; it will always be there.

No country can block the supply of sunlight or wind.

CBS News wrote an article titled, “Which form of energy is cheapest, CBS news asks the experts to find out.” It was published in September 2025.

According to this article, wind is the cheapest followed by solar and then fossil fuels (whether it be coal, oil or natural gas). Currently, nuclear power is the most expensive. These costs included the cost of storing energy in batteries for times when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing.

Wind and solar power has been rapidly decreasing in cost over time. It will keep getting cheaper as time goes on. Another advantage of wind and solar power is that most of the costs are up front and then continuing costs are very small.

Once the solar panels are built, there are very little ongoing costs for making solar power. Windmills are very similar. When you get your power from fossil fuels you keep paying continuously.

Norway gets 98.38% percent of their energy from wind, solar or water. Do you think they are worried about what is happening at the Strait of Hormuz? They enjoy true energy security.

Norway’s energy costs are likely to go down over time. Norway is building a better future for their kids. They don’t have to worry about events happening in other parts of the world. Their actions aren’t helping Russia fund its war.

Oh, and Norway is helping us all by lowering its impact on the planet.

We should be like Norway.
