Letter to the editor: We need lawmakers who can think independently

Posted

In this time of steadily increasing partisanship, we desperately need legislators who can think and act independently in support of the vital interests of the regular people who they represent.

In her last term in Congress, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez has led from the front on bills strengthening rural healthcare and support for veterans, improving childcare availability and increasing programs that provide vocational educational alternatives to college.

While supporting most Democratic Party priorities, she has not been afraid to make independent decisions sometimes contrary to party leadership and the loud voices requiring agreement with a rigid checklist of positions.  She is focused on supporting practical improvement in the lives of residents of the Third District, regardless of partisan affiliation.

As we find ourselves increasingly surrounded by the loudest partisan voices, we are in need of thoughtful independent leaders supporting real practical improvements in the lives of regular people. Congresswoman Gluesenkamp Perez has shown herself time and time again to be this kind of leader.
