Letter to the editor: Putin, not Reagan, has won the Cold War

In his first debate with Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, state Sen. John Braun claimed he did not have the security clearances necessary to know whether President Trump’s decision to go to war with Iran was the right one.

Braun’s immediate predecessor as Third District MAGA candidate for Congress, Joe Kent, did have security clearance as director of the National Counterterrorism Center for the Trump Administration. Kent resigned from that position, writing, “Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation.” Indeed, it was the conclusion of American and European intelligence that was the case.

But the question for Braun or anyone seeking to be a congressional representative is a larger one. You will have to vote on matters of war and peace. Of life and death for some of your constituents or their children. You may not have all the clearances you think you need to have but you will still have to make a decision.

The current president who endorsed you has made a fateful decision to realign the United States with Russia and its murderous leader, Vladimir Putin. Putin kills people who disagree with him. He has them murdered. His war that he started against Ukraine has cost the lives of 150,000 Ukrainians and 450,000 Russians. He is spreading his clandestine murder and propaganda into Western Europe, our former allies, and has already spread it here in the U.S. Storm 1516, a Russian bot farm has been proven to be responsible for attacks against Democratic senatorial candidate James Talarico in Texas and others.

Putin’s goal, that the president who endorsed you, Sen. Braun, has allied the U.S. with, is to destroy the democracies of Western Europe and the United States and especially to dismember and destroy NATO.

Conservatives have been saying for many years that, “President Reagan won the Cold War.” President Reagan would be spinning in his grave over Trump’s despicable, disastrous decision to align with Vladimir Putin. Along with Cold War-era American politicians of both parties like Sen. Henry Jackson of our state, Reagan would be furious.

But former KGB operative Putin who watched the Berlin Wall come down from his position in East Germany begged to differ. The Cold War didn’t end then. Putin called the collapse of the Soviet Union “the greatest geopolitical tragedy of the 20th century.” He set out for revenge to destroy the West.

Putin, not Reagan, has won the Cold War.

President Trump, who has endorsed you, Sen. Braun, and expects abject loyalty from you, has surrendered.

World War III is on its way.
