Letter to the editor: Port of Centralia Commissioner Julie Shaffley will continue to serve with integrity and purpose

Posted

I am writing to express my strong support for Julie Shaffley’s reelection as a candidate for Port of Centralia commissioner.

Julie brings the leadership, vision and dedication that our port district needs to ensure sustainable growth, responsible management, and a forward-thinking approach to regional development.

In the past 10 years under Julie’s watch, the port’s assessed value has grown from $1.834 billion in 2015 to $4.214 billion in 2025. The amount of tax dollars that has filtered into the Centralia School District, Timberland Library and Riverside Fire Authority has allowed them to also grow their services over this time period.

While the assessed value of TransAlta decreased, the port district’s value increased, softening the blow to the port’s taxpayers and taxing districts.

Julie has consistently demonstrated her ability to make informed, balanced decisions that benefit both the economy and the environment. Her background as a 35-year successful business owner, board member of the chamber and board member of the Economic Alliance of Lewis County uniquely equips her to tackle the complex challenges facing our ports today.

Her commitment to fiscal responsibility and getting businesses that fit Centralia’s best interest sets her apart as a candidate who truly represents the interests of the people. Julie understands the critical role our ports play in driving local jobs, trade and innovation, and she has the practical skills to ensure these opportunities are expanded in a sustainable and equitable way. In a recent economic study, it stated that in the coming year over $1 billion of economic growth is attributed directly to the Port of Centralia.

I consider that a great report card.

While some would like the port to be more transparent, their role is to maintain confidentiality in real estate negotiations, personnel matters and legal issues. I believe the public is informed when they can be and not before. The port’s real estate dealings are very competitive. Leaking information could give the competitors an edge and we could lose business we would really like to have here.

I believe Julie Shaffley will continue to serve with integrity and purpose, and I urge others in our community to support her candidacy.

We need leaders like her who are not only qualified, but also deeply invested in the future of our region.

Join me in voting for Julie.
