Letter to the editor: Labeling Republicans as evil is a mistake

Posted

MJ Marsh of Chehalis in a Feb. 29 letter in the Chronicle said “Trump is a liar. He is mean. He is a bully, a rapist, a draft dodger, a tax cheat, a business fraudster, a serial adulterer, an insurrectionist and more. What all these behaviors have in common is they stand behind lies.”

Apparently, Marsh does not like Donald Trump. However, Marsh is unintentionally correct when unintentionally labeling these accusations as lies. They are labels based on CNN fake news. Marsh watches too much CNN.

During the last eight years, those of us who support President Trump or support the ideas of “America First” or “Make America Great Again,” perhaps 75 million voters, have suffered from numerous derogatory labels and name calling. This is a mistake of the “labelers” and the “name callers.”

“Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth” was the concluding statement of President Abraham Lincoln’s “Gettysburg Address.” Lincoln was our first Republican president.

If you believe Lincoln’s words, then please consider the idea that “the people” includes Democrats, Independents and even Republicans. So perhaps, even Republicans can be considered members of “the people” and should be allowed to contribute to government “by the people.”

We “MAGA” Republicans vote, and it is a mistake to label us as in some way evil just because we disagree with you.

Sun Tzu said, “Know your enemy.” I submit that name callers and labelers are demonstrating their failure to “know their enemy.” I submit that name calling and labeling their opponents shows that they cannot justify with provable facts that their governing actions are beneficial to our country.

So why not allow people who disagree with you to practice their First Amendment right to express their opinion without the name calling and the labeling, like previous Democrats did in the not too distant past?
