Letter to the editor: Keep the innovation going in the Centralia School District

Posted

I have been involved in the education system in Lewis County for nearly 35 years, and during that time I have witnessed significant changes in how we manage, implement and execute the resources entrusted to us by taxpayers.

In 1996, when the state of Washington shifted from norm-referenced educational models and testing practices to today’s standards-based approach focused on proficiency and mastery of core concepts, school districts across the state faced the challenge of realigning themselves to this new educational landscape — while still meeting the needs of students, parents, and the broader community.

The Centralia School District has met that challenge head-on and is now among the leading innovators in educational content, teaching practices and student-focused opportunities. This creative, and at times difficult, path has resulted in a more engaged student body, purposeful parent involvement guided by a shared vision, and a staff, administration and school board committed to bringing real-world experiences and life-ready skills into CSD classrooms every day.

As a community, we should be proud. This is what makes education relevant and meaningful in the lives of our students. Levy dollars support these programs, as well as the talented, dedicated educators who make them successful. Under the leadership of Dr. Lisa Grant, these public resources have been used responsibly and equitably to meet the needs of all students. Her vision and commitment are a tremendous asset to the foundational practices of our school district.

I encourage our community to join me in supporting the Centralia School District levy to ensure our students are well prepared as they go out and change the world everyday.
