Letter to the editor: John Braun has the independent mind we need in Southwest Washington

Posted

Unfortunately, John Braun is often judged by the Republican label and Trump’s endorsement rather than by his own character, record and actions. John should not be defined by assumptions about MAGA. An endorsement does not mean blind allegiance.

While John Braun has never hidden that he is a Republican or that he wants to see the administration succeed, this does not erase a person’s identity or ability to think for himself.

John Braun has shown us that he intends to use his own judgment: admitting Joe Biden won the 2020 election and openly disagreeing with many components of the current administration’s approach to tariffs, the war, etc.

I’ve never heard John Braun say or do anything that would suggest he blindly follows Trump or puts party loyalty above his own judgment. He has only shown that he is willing to think for himself, acknowledge when his own party falls short, and engage with people who see things differently.

People are letting political labels take over the conversation, but this election is too important for us to vote based on party over person. John Braun has his own convictions. I see someone who understands that public service means being accountable to the people you represent, not simply falling in line with a party or a president. We need elected officials who not only bring the knowledge and experience to deliver meaningful results, but who also lead with decency, sincerity, and independent thought. He has the will, the ability, and the focus to make life better for every person he serves.

Braun is not running to be anyone’s puppet. He is a businessman, a veteran and a legislator who has built a life and a career outside of Washington, D.C.

There will be issues where Braun agrees with President Trump and issues where he disagrees. That is what an independent representative looks like.

I believe he can offer the kind of representation Southwest Washington needs, and I hope voters will give him that opportunity.
