Letter to the editor: Jeff Landrum is the best choice for Toledo School Board

Posted

This election, Toledo will choose who becomes the newest member of the Toledo School District Board of Directors.

After learning about both candidates in District 5 and reviewing their past actions, words and policies, I am proud to endorse Jeff Landrum for Toledo School Board.

Jeff has proven again and again that he is willing to go the extra mile to support the education of kids in our schools: his kids and all kids. He’ll work to make sure that resources and services are available when students need them. He has stood up many times for principles of fairness and respect: values that we can all practice and pass on to our kids. He is committed to our schools supporting students with a variety of needs, including not just a well-rounded academic curriculum but also athletic, agricultural and technical education opportunities.

I’ve seen Jeff become involved with many local initiatives, supporting fundraisers, community events and local organizations that strengthen Toledo. He supports programs that provide meals, clothing and school supplies to children who need them, as well as bus transportation to and from Toledo schools. He’s committed to ensuring that every Toledo student, no matter their background, can find solid opportunities for success.

Jeff displays that rare combination of compassion and competence. He works well with parents, teachers, staff and community partners. He has helped to build bridges between the school district, school board and other local officials to begin to plan for the impact of growth and new development. He is focused on smart planning and securing outside resources so that our schools remain well-funded and enriched while minimizing the overall cost to local taxpayers.

I believe Jeff will serve all Toledo area voters. He listens to community needs, he asks good questions that lead to solutions and he does his homework on the issues carefully. When he has something to say, he provides clear and accurate information, treats people with dignity and has a moral compass that I can trust.

His approach is rooted in collaborative, honest and practical problem-solving. Jeff also does not involve himself in partisan politics, which leads to distrust, division and animosity toward our neighbors. The school board is a nonpartisan elected position for many reasons, the biggest of which is to remain focused on our schools, our community and the needs of our kids.

Most importantly, Jeff shares my belief that all of our children deserve the opportunity for a quality education. That's why Jeff Landrum is the right choice to make for Toledo.
