Helen Nowlin’s letter concerning the economic problems of this state requires a response.
It is the thinking of people like her that has created the situation this state faces right now. Forty years of Democrats ruling this state have created the problems we have.
A $15 billion deficit came about because two years ago there was a budget surplus projected. The state Legislature had three basic options: Lower taxes, return the surplus to the taxpayers or spend like crazy.
Being ultra-liberal Democrats, they spent, with new programs and increased budgets. Now, two years later, that surplus has disappeared. Now they have two options: reduce spending or increase taxes.
Guess which one they are choosing.
At least Gov. Bob Ferguson is smart enough to know that leading the third most expensive state in the union for cost of living, he must reduce costs, not increase spending. The Legislature wants to raise taxes on corporations and small businesses through wealth taxes and increased labor taxes. They are also looking to increase taxes on the citizens through increased property taxes and wealth taxes.
My favorite is the Carbon tax: “You can’t pollute here. But give us lots of money and it will be OK to pollute.” And, of course, the old standby: “Give us an income tax and we’ll consider lowering the sales tax.”
Her attack on President Trump’s “wrecking ball” has already saved the taxpayers of this country hundreds of billions, if not trillions, of dollars through fraud, waste and abuse of the Democrats from the last four years. And he wants to give some of that back to the taxpayers.
Ms. Nowlin seems to have forgotten that. What this state needs is a Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) of our own. Of course the Democrats and other liberals are screaming bloody murder, not because these expenses are good but because losing them means losing all that money in fraud, waste and graft.
And you can’t blame the problems of President Trump’s first term. Thank the Democrats that controlled Congress and fought him tooth and nail for four years. Then gave us President Biden. So, they whine and cry to the media who immediately excoriate President Trump and Mr. Musk. Now unthinking liberals are burning Tesla factories and cars and waving Nazi salutes. Very mature. Microsoft and Boeing, as well as several other large businesses, are threatening to leave the state because of the tax environment here.
Ms. Nowlin and others like her won’t be happy until we’ve lost our entire economic base. Then they will wonder what happened.
I, for one, am fed up with this type of thinking and the tax and spend Democrats that have been slowly destroying this state for over 40 years.
I’m moving to a more citizen-friendly state. I’ve lived here my entire 76 years. I’m done. Good luck to those who are staying. Will the last person to leave the state, please turn out the lights.
