Letter to the editor: If there was ever a time that the U.S. has been weaker, I don’t recall it

Is anyone else as scared as I am? I feel we are headed down the path of World War III.

Nothing like starting a war for the sake of Israel, regime change, proactive dismantling of nuclear capabilities, or whatever the reason is now.

This is probably the scariest time to be alive in my 60 years. We are forever on the brink of crisis it seems. If not from actual war, then within our nation. It’s like we have to be angry and kick some serious butt every day. To what end?

Many of us remember Vietnam and all the lies and death, the money spent, the anger at our government for all of that. How about the Cold War? Always racing to build more bombs that could destroy the world in a second. Not to mention Iraq and Afghanistan, all the money spent, all the death and destruction.

We never seem to learn.

If there was ever a time that the U.S. has been weaker, I don’t recall it. We are stretched thin. U.S. citizens are told to evacuate from the Middle East with no plan to help them get out and no place for them to go.

Fend for yourselves, apparently.

We have burned up all our good will, alliances and good name (not to mention moral standing). All to keep an obviously belligerent senile man happy or to stroke his ego. I am not sure what the motivation is.

How about the Board of Peace? Shield of the Americas? What is this, some kind of DC comic movie? It does seem like everything is performative and has no substance. Invading a country looks good on TV but helping others to return home or having respect for the fallen soldiers, not so much.

We don’t have enough money for preschool, SNAP or universal health care, but a billion dollars a day seems like nothing to the mad king.

How is war making us great? Price of fuel is way up, which results in everything getting more expensive. It will cost more to get things to you.

Once the prices go up, they never seem to come down. Food, gas, home heating, travel and any recreation will also add to the strain.

And the greatest cost of all is the lives that will be lost. Those who serve are not the wealthy, but average Americans.

What is the value of those lives?
