Letter to the editor: Help me understand

Posted

The recent news that Graham Platner of Maine has recently been accused of rape and will likely end his candidacy for the Senate demonstrates a profound difference between Democrat and Republican senses of right and wrong.

The incident was a single accusation of wrongdoing; he has not been charged, nor has the case been prosecuted in court. That’s not to say it isn’t a serious moral failure, showing Platner’s lack of moral character and disregard for a woman’s physical safety.

Democrat support for his candidacy was withdrawn immediately after the news broke. It was unimaginable that they would want a morally bankrupt person representing them.

In comparison, our president has been accused by 28 women of various acts of sexual misconduct, including unwanted kissing, groping, sexual assault and rape. He has been found guilty in court of sexually abusing writer E. Jean Carrol. In a 2005 Access Hollywood tape,  Mr. Trump bragged of grabbing women by their genitals. His close connection to pedophile Jeffrey Epstein has raised questions regarding his involvement in the kind of abuse Epstein practiced.

My question is, “How could any person with such a provable lack of common decency be supported by anyone with a sense of right and wrong that consider themselves to be decent human beings?”

There is a disconnect here that I do not understand.

I would appreciate a response from readers that could help me understand what there is about Donald Trump that allow you to continue supporting a person without any sense of common decency or any moral compass?
