Letter to the Editor: Expand the Supreme Court

It goes without saying that passing the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA) is an imperative to restore bodily autonomy to American women in the wake of the Supreme Court’s impending ruling overturning Roe v. Wade. But this Supreme Court would overturn WHPA’s ban on states criminalizing abortion unless we also pass the Judiciary Act, which would add four seats to the Court to recover its legitimacy from the partisan takeover by the Senate that Mitch McConnell led, which is what got us into this mess in the first place.

In fact, the Supreme Court in its current makeup will continue to decimate the Voting Rights Act, chip away at progress on LGBTQ rights at a time when our LGBTQ youth are under political attack like never before, and hobble our ability to address every core national challenge from climate change to gun violence if we don’t expand it to restore its proper role of safeguarding our democracy.

Conservatives have lately unveiled a wish list of legal targets in the form of our most landmark progressive Supreme Court rulings on civil rights and LGBTQ rights. The far right is already about to fulfill one of its generations-long policy dreams. Those of us who value living in a free country are being naïve fools if we think they won’t seriously come after more of our most-cherished freedoms.

The only solution to this whole crisis is to expand the Supreme Court.
