Letter to the editor: An open letter on Lewis County property taxes

Posted

This is a copy of an email I sent to the Lewis County Assessor’s Office this morning.

To Ross Neilson, Lewis County assessor:

I filed an appeal of my 2023 property tax assessment electronically in December 2023. The Board of Equalization held a hearing on my appeal on Sept. 26, 2024.

I have not yet received notice of the results of that hearing.

On Oct. 28, 2024, I received a notice of real property value change for the assessment year of 2024. The appeal deadline is listed as Nov. 23, 2024, less than 30 days after I received the notice.

I am forced to file an appeal for 2024 without the receiving the results of my 2023 appeal. The appeal deadline has been shortened by 30 days, which does not seem reasonable given how long it has taken the county to address my appeal.

I have a suggestion. The reverse side of my real property value change notice is blank. On the back side of the notice, please print an explanation of how the change in value was calculated, for example, what resources and formulas were used to determine the assessed value.

I think other property owners would be interested in this information also. I am sending a copy of this email to the editor of The Chronicle.  I am curious to hear the opinions from other property owners about this idea and hope the editor will print this email in the letters section.

Thank you for your consideration of this suggestion.
