Law enforcement in the Olympia area stopped a suspect fleeing with a baby in a stolen truck on Thursday, April 30.

The baby was unharmed.

Olympia Police Department officers and Thurston County Sheriff’s Office deputies had responded to an auto theft in progress, locating the vehicle on Interstate 5 at around 7 a.m.

The truck fled, with a pursuit going through a construction zone before a deputy successfully spiked the truck. A sergeant equipped with a Grappler was able to successfully bring the vehicle to a stop, according to Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders.

Initially, deputies set up for a standard high risk stop with K9 Asher, according to Sanders.

“After the suspect exited the vehicle, deputies observed her holding a baby,” Sanders wrote in a social media post Thursday afternoon.

K9 Asher was put away and deputies made the decision to intervene.

The suspect and the baby were taken into custody safely, according to Sanders.

The suspect was turned over to the Olympia Police Department for charges of auto theft, eluding, and reckless endangerment of the child.

TCSO cared for the child until Child Protective Services could arrive and take the child into state custody.

“Nice work by everyone involved to appropriately shift tactics after being caught off guard by the presence of a baby in the vehicle to ensure the child was not hurt,” Sanders wrote.
