The Onalaska boys soccer team put together its “best performance” yet at home against Seton Catholic on Thursday, but a late five-goal flurry helped the Crusaders pull away for a 6-0 win.
“We had a good performance, especially in the first half,” Onalaska coach Luis Magana said. “It's the inexperience and lack of subs that come back to haunt us.”
The two teams were scoreless late in the first half, and it appeared that that 0-0 scoreline would hold until the break. The Crusaders were able to get on the board, though, scoring on the second-to-last play of the half.
That 1-0 scoreline held until about the 60th minute, when “the flood gates opened.”
Onalaska right back Jovanni Hernandez had to leave the game after a collision, and Seton Catholic took full advantage by scoring five goals in the next 15 minutes.
Christofer James ended the night with 12 saves in net, and the Loggers performance earned them praise from Seton Catholic’s coach, according to Magana.
“If we can play as hard as we played the first half with the communication, defensive rotations, and aggressiveness, we can definitely find ourselves in some competitive matches this season,” Magana said. “The boys are hungry and eager to learn, which makes coaching this team a very joyful experience.”
Onalaska (0-5, 0-5 1A Trico) will be back at home on Tuesday, April 8, to host King’s Way Christian.
