A former MMA fighter with the nickname “Cadillac” preyed on three women living in tents in Portland in 2021 and 2022, a Multnomah County jury determined Friday.
The jury deliberated for about five hours before returning a guilty verdict on all 16 counts against Zachary L. Andrews, including three counts of first-degree rape.
In wrenching testimony last Tuesday, a 43-year-old woman seated just feet from Andrews in the witness box said she recognized Andrews as “a person I thought was a friend.”
The woman had been living on the streets in Old Town near Union Station when Andrews followed her into a tent and attacked her on a rainy day in October 2021.
“I had told him no and to get out and he didn’t listen,” she said.
All three women reported the attack within hours or days, a police spokesperson previously told The Oregonian/OregonLive, but Andrews wasn’t arrested until last April. The spokesperson said officers needed time to gather evidence.
DNA evidence tied Andrews to two of the women, and Andrews, now 33, testified the sex was consensual. The jury didn’t believe him.
Andrews faces a minimum sentence of 25 years in prison, but could face a harsher punishment during a hearing set for Wednesday morning before Circuit Judge Celia Howes.
