2026 is the year of the swine.

Well, maybe not according to the Chinese zodiac. But according to the results of the 58th annual Southwest Washington Junior Livestock Sale, it was swine’s time to shine.

Of the 242 animals sold Friday night in the auction that surpassed four hours, 122 were swine. There was still some blue in the sky when Mason Heinricher took the show ring with his grand champion swine at around 8:30 p.m., and it was well past many of the youth producers’ bedtimes by the time the category was complete.

The next most popular species after the 122 swine were lambs with 53 sold, followed by 28 steers and 18 goats.

The 2026 junior livestock sale was dedicated to Arnold and Leona Huguenin of A&L Mobile Slaughtering, and Katherine Humphrey was named the Hay Queen before the auctioneering kicked off.

Among the highest winning bids for swine was Curtis Valley Cattle member Kimber Huber’s reserve grand champion, reeling in $30 per pound at 262 pounds. Fellow Curtis Valley Cattle producer Brandt Huber collected $26 per pound at 262 pounds for a blue-ribbon swine, and Laney McGregor of Napavine Go Getters sold a 232-pound lightweight reserve champion hog at $20 per pound.

Several goats pulled in big money, headlined by Maci Bloomstrom of Adna FFA, who sold a blue-ribbon goat for $37 per pound at 95 pounds. Critter Wranglers’ Malaki Wieland collected $33 per pound for a blue-ribbon goat at 114 pounds, and Annalee Jurica of Valley Ranchers raked in $30 per pound for a 109-pound blue-ribbon goat.

The highest per-pound price for a lamb was earned by Pure Country’s Elena Colson, who sold a class champion 115-pounder for a whopping $36 per pound. Kolby Iverson of Alpha Better Bets came away with the biggest pot of cash out of the steers or heifers with $13 per pound for a 1,126-pound heifer.
