The interment of unclaimed veterans’ remains at the Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent will no longer take place on or around Veterans Day, according to the Lewis County coroner.
“Due to the ongoing government shutdown, the efforts to coordinate this request through the numerous federal agencies involved have proven very difficult,” Lewis County Coroner Warren McLeod said in an Oct. 29 news release.
As a result, the coroner’s office will now look to a later date.
“Once a date and time has been established a press release will go out with that information,” McLeod said.
On Oct. 7, 20 people gathered at the Pioneer Greenwood Cemetery in Chehalis to honor eight people whose cremated remains had been unclaimed by their family.
During the ceremony, McLeod said the remains of six veterans — and one veteran’s spouse — would soon be transported to Tahoma National Cemetery, hopefully around Veterans Day.
The veterans will receive full military honors, McLeod said at the time.
