In loving memory of Hilda and Stephen Nakai

Hilda E. Nakai, 76, passed away on May 3, 2023, and Stephen T. Nakai, 79, passed away on Oct. 23, 2023. Both were residents of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. 

Hilda was born on March 27, 1947, and Stephen was born on Jan. 10, 1944, both in Lanai City, Hawaii. Hilda was the daughter of Placido and fiFloserfina (Dumayas) Ballesteros. Stephen was the son of Mitsuru and Kiyoko (Yamamoto) Nakai. Both were preceded in death by their parents. Hilda was preceded in death by siblings, Reynaldo, Ernesto and Dominador; and brother-in-law, Jeffrey Rowray. Stephen was preceded in death by sibling, Ronald; and sister-in-law, Amparo Nakai. 

They are survived by their loving children, Kerri K. (Richard) Muha, Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and Kevin K. (Cherie) Nakai, Chehalis, Washington; and grandchildren Ezra Nakai and Melanie Muha. Hilda is also survived by siblings, Richard (Cathy) Ballesteros, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Placido Jr. (Marsha) Ballesteros, Wahiawa, Hawaii, Eleanor Rowray, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Lolita (Ivan) Konno, Lihue, Hawaii, Jessie (Douglas) Omura, Pearl City, Hawaii, Norma (James) Craig, Kure Beach, North Carolina, and Fely (Paul) Chalmers, Koloa, Hawaii; and sister-in-law, Rosie Ballesteros, Lansing, Kansas. Stephen is survived by a sister, Fay Ann (John) Maxson, Honolulu, Hawaii. Both are also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. 

Hilda was a 1965 graduate of Lanai High School. She retired from the Hawaii State Federal Credit Union after many years of service in their loan department. 

Stephen was a 1962 graduate of Lanai High School. He studied at the University of Hawaii and Idaho State University and became a licensed architect. Stephen retired from Osumi Nakai Maekawa Architects, where he was a partner for many years. 

Both Hilda and Stephen were active members of the Jehovah's Witnesses. Hilda was a full-time volunteer for over 50 years. Stephen volunteered and designed many construction projects for the organization in Hawaii. Hilda and Stephen loved to travel as well as spending time with friends and family, especially their grandson, Ezra. 

The family would like to thank Horizons Personal Care, Grane Hospice, Arbutus Park Manor, Conemaugh Home Health and Crichton Rehabilitation for the care that Hilda and Stephen received at these facilities. 

At Hilda and Stephen’s request, there will be no public viewing or service. The family is being served by the Harris Funeral Home, 500 Cherry Lane, Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
