From an early age, George built his life through determination and grit. He began working alongside his father and stepmother, Helen Mitchell Sanders, in a charter fishing business and later served as a volunteer firefighter for Grays Harbor Fire District No. 1. He proudly served in the United States Army and went on to work for Boeing. George also spent time as a logger before beginning a long and steady career as a coal miner with WIDCO, where he remained until his retirement. His dedication and work ethic were evident in everything he did. Later in life, he renewed his commitment to his community, serving as a volunteer firefighter in the Logan Hill area and always willing to lend his mechanical skills to family and friends.
In the 1960s, George met his loving wife, Maureen O. Mitchell. They were married in Shelton, Washington, and built their life together in Neilton, then Aberdeen, before settling in Chehalis. Their 34-year marriage was filled with love, devotion and a strong commitment to family until her untimely passing. Together, they raised their children in faith and attended St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Later in life, George married Donna Mitchell and spent 24 wonderful years with her as a devoted husband and provider. He was the kind of man anyone would be proud to call their husband.
His family was the center of his life, and he cherished every moment spent with them. He was loving, patient, kind and generous — a humble and intelligent man who, despite not having the opportunity to pursue advanced degrees himself, worked tirelessly through persistence and hard work to help put both his daughters and all of his grandchildren through college.
In retirement, George fully embraced his passions. He spent countless hours restoring cars and proudly showcased his work at local car shows. He enjoyed gardening, maintaining his property and taking on mechanical projects of all kinds. A longtime resident of Logan Hill Road in Chehalis, George took great pride in his home and the land he cared for.
George was an avid hunter, fisherman and photographer who found great joy and peace in nature. Whether in the woods, on the water or behind the lens of his camera, he appreciated the beauty of the world around him.
He was quietly humorous, often making small jokes, and had a smile that could light up a room. Those who knew him will remember not only his strength but also the warmth and joy he brought to everyday moments.
George will be remembered for his strong hands, generous heart and unwavering love for his family. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
George was preceded in death by his first wife, Maureen O. Mitchell; his mother, Grace Mitchell; and his father, Bud Mitchell.
He is survived by his beloved children, Karen Rose, Laurie Dahla, Trygve Mitchell Nelson, Skip Rose and Jim Dahla; his grandchildren, Michael Rose, Jonathan Rose, Kaitlin Dahla, Emily Rose and Katie Thiessen; his great-grandchild, Owen Rose; his siblings, Mike Mitchell, Judy Cook, Shirley Mitchell and Rick Cook; his stepmother, Helen Mitchell Sanders; and his widow, Donna Mitchell; as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, stepchildren and step-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church on July 7 at 11 a.m., followed by burial at Alpha Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest in the peace of Christ. A reception will follow the interment.
