In loving memory of Carl Karboski: 1934-2025

Posted

Carl “Cork” Karboski was born on June 26, 1934, in Dryad, Washington, and passed away on Sept. 12, 2025, at home. He lived in Dryad on Kobe Road his entire life, except when he served in the Army. Carl served his community as a founding member of the Doty-Dryad-Meskill Fire District 16. He was a volunteer firefighter for many years and acted as a district commissioner into his 80s. He was very proud to have worked as a logger and truck driver for Weyerhaeuser for more than 40 years.

Carl and his wife, Gail, were married for more than 61 years. They were 4-H leaders for the Rainbow Wranglers club for many years. Together they enjoyed sports, particularly the Seahawks — they were season ticket holders for more than 30 years — and the Mariners. They spent many enjoyable hours traveling to the various sports games their family members participated in and enjoyed supporting the Pe Ell School sports teams. Carl was a member of the Pe Ell Booster Club, and he ran chains at the home games for Pe Ell High School football for many years.

Carl loved to help his neighbors, friends and family with anything they needed. There were many days when he would be off at someone’s place fixing something or assisting in some project. He enjoyed hunting with family and friends and particularly loved driving around with his grandson, Kris. When not watching sports or enjoying time with family, he could be found at the local casino, playing bingo or taking a chance at the slot machines.

Carl loved and was dearly loved by his family and friends, including his wife, Gail (Bateman); his children and their spouses, Debra (John) Shortman, Cheryl Karboski, Larry (Wendy) Karboski, Susan (Colin) Newell; and nephew Asa (Tonya) Bateman. He was very proud of his six grandchildren: Kris and JJ (Felicia) Shortman, Preston and Makayla Newell, and Nathan Karboski and Ashley (Jake) Tiegs; as well as five great-grandchildren: Axel Karboski, Charlotte and Jameson Shortman, and Adonis (Addy) and Callahan Newell-Walle. His love also extended to numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. His unyielding support, guidance and total devotion to family will remain their foundation.

Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Gail; father, Joseph; mother, Wanda; stepfather, Edward “Dutch” Feuchter; brothers Joe (Jean), John (Lois) and Frank (Fran); and sister Helen Lee.

Remembrances can be made to the Doty-Dryad-Meskill Fire District 16.

Carl’s family will hold a celebration of life at a later date. In the meantime, if you wish, please raise a glass of beer in remembrance of a great father, husband, relative, friend and community member.
