Alex spent his childhood in Battle Ground, Washington. Those early years were surrounded by many aunts, uncles and cousins, where he really developed his love of music and playing instruments. He spent many weekends at the beach with his grandparents and cousins.
He moved to Napavine, Washington, his freshman year of high school, where he made many lasting friendships that still hold up today. He graduated from Napavine High School in June 1998. In April 1999, he met his future wife, Stephanie Ashley, on a blind date — they married in September 2002. In 2013, they moved to Littlerock, Washington, where they were welcomed by the neighbors of Mumby.
Alex was accepted into the electrical apprenticeship in 2000, where he became a journeyman electrician. Later, he joined the Sheet Metal Union, Local 66. He was well respected by his union brothers and sisters.
Brewing was his passion. He started Headless Mumby Brewing in 2018 with his friend Keith Ciani. He made many good friendships within the local brewing community throughout the years, participating in various collaborations and events. It is fitting that he passed on National Beer Day.
Alex enjoyed rock hounding at Ruby Beach and Damon Point with his daughter, Adalynn. Hiking around Capitol Forest and camping with friends. Alex was always creating something, whether that be music, laser engraving, painting, knitting, making cheese or just working on projects around the house. He had always wanted a flock of sheep; finally, he convinced his daughters to join the 4-H sheep project. Alex was always curious and thirsting for knowledge. He loved reading a variety of books to learn more about the world.
Alex was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Hilde Maffeo, and Ralph and Barbara Kelly; and father-in-law, John Ashley.
He is survived by his wife, Stephanie; daughters, Teagan and Adalynn; parents, Thomas and Helen Maffeo; sister, Katie Maffeo; mother-in-law, Kathy Ashley; brother-in-law, Ryan (Becky) Ashley; niece, Kaylee Ashley; nephews, Preston and Lucas Ashley; great-niece, Logan Ashley; and great-nephew, Oliver Ashley.
His celebration of life will be held at Funeral Alternatives of Washington in Tumwater (455 North St. SE, Tumwater, WA 98501) on April 26, 2026, at 1 p.m.
