Sargent Road Southwest in Grand Mound was closed at times this week as construction began on a roundabout near U.S. Highway 12 on Wednesday. The roundabout will be at the intersection of U.S. Highway 12 and Sargent Road Southwest. Completion is expected sometime in fall 2023. The roundabout is designed to be expanded to a four-lane highway in the future if needed. According to a Thurston County news release, the roundabout was chosen as they have been shown to reduce accident severity as well as maintain good traffic flows. The project is expected to cost $6 million, and both the county and the Chehalis Tribe are contributing funding.
