In Focus: Onalaska students move hundreds of large trout to Carlisle Lake

The Onalaska High School aquaculture program once again took center stage on Thursday morning.

On April 23, students in the program released 300-plus 7-pound rainbow trout into Carlisle Lake for recreational anglers.

The fish were grown on campus for the past 15 months.

Each year, students raise rainbow trout eggs, keeping track of the water quality, cleaning the tanks and completing other daily tasks to learn about the best practices for raising the fish.

“Many times in class, students struggle because they can’t relate,” Onalaska High School natural resources and aquaculture teacher Kevin Hoffman told The Chronicle in 2025. “The aquaculture program, the lake, it’s all just learning tools for students to acquire different tools and knowledge and in return it's benefiting the community.”
