In focus: Hundreds attend White Pass Castle Jam

Ski area gets ready for remaining events as ski season draws to a close

Though it was balmy by mountain standards and conditions were a tad bit slushy, dozens of competitors stepped into their ski or snowboard bindings to compete in the White Pass Ski Area’s 2024 Castle Jam freestyle trick competition.

Hundreds looked on while competitors threw down their best tricks throughout the afternoon of Saturday, March 16, on the remnants of the snow castle from the annual White Pass Winter Carnival earlier this month. The castle was modified with multiple jumps, rails and quarter pipes for competitors.

Up for grabs were bragging rights along with new gear, including skis and snowboards from sponsors such as Never Summer and K2.

While the ski season may be drawing to a close, White Pass still has a few remaining events coming up, starting with the Great White Get Down on Saturday, March 23, and Sunday, March 24, beginning at 10:20 a.m. on both days.

The Great White Get Down will feature International Freeskier and Snowboarder Association (IFSA) junior athletes competing to see who can navigate their way the fastest down the Mahre Run — formerly known as the Chair Run — going into the Execution Run, a double black diamond run.

Then, on Saturday, April 6, and Sunday, April 7, White Pass will host the Bank-a-Bowl event, mixing a banked slalom course with jumps and “big money booter” at the end of the course. It will be held directly behind the main ski lodge, enabling spectators to watch from the balcony.

The final event of the season at White Pass will be the Pond Skim 2024, scheduled for Saturday, April 20, from noon to 1:30 p.m.

A small pond will be at the end of the run near the main ski lodge. Intrepid skiers and snowboarders will get the chance to try to skim across the pond. Those who register by April 10 get a free Pond Skim 2024 shirt.

Additionally, as the ski season draws to a close, White Pass will only be open on weekends. For more information on events or the end of the ski season, call White Pass at 509-672-3101.
