When officers arrived at the scene of the crash, they found Erik Mario Moya screaming in pain.
While trying to determine the man’s injuries, Washington State Trooper Anthony Ziegenfuss noted that Moya had glassy, bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and a smell of intoxicants on his breath, according to a probable cause affidavit.
The 23-year-old Moya, driving a Mercedes, had been traveling the wrong way on State Route 14 in Camas late Monday and crashed head-on into a Buick driven by 18-year-old Michael O’Brien, killing O’Brien and injuring two passengers in the Buick, the Washington State Patrol reported.
Investigators discovered two empty Buzzballz containers, an empty Twisted Hard Iced Tea container, an open case of Twisted Tea and an empty Coors Light bottle in the back of the Mercedes, according to court documents.
Moya had been driving on the highway’s shoulder and at varying speeds, the affidavit states.
Troopers followed the ambulance that took Moya to a nearby hospital, where he would say, “I’m so drunk right now,” while claiming he had had only two beers at a restaurant before he got in his car, court records say.
When Moya was administered a breathalyzer test, it registered 0.228, three times the legal limit, according to court documents. His injuries reportedly include a broken rib.
Police arrested him, and he faces vehicular homicide, vehicular assault and other charges. Bail was set at $500,000.
O’Brien and his two passengers, Jack Craig and William Reinhardt, were seniors at Roosevelt High School, days away from graduating.
