In a display of creativity and craftsmanship, students at Toledo High School have turned heads and ignited the spirit of fall with their latest art installation: a colossal welded pumpkin sculpture that stands proudly on the school grounds.

The colossal pumpkin, measuring an impressive 8 feet in height and spanning 8 feet in width, is the result of weeks of hard work and dedication by a group of talented high school students led by their career and technical education (CTE) teacher, John Ball. The project was conceived as a way to celebrate the season and promote hands-on learning in the school's CTE program.

The sculpture was created from an assortment of donated materials, including reclaimed metal from local businesses. Students spent countless hours welding, shaping and meticulously detailing the oversized pumpkin.

The project allowed them to apply their knowledge of welding techniques and artistry, transforming raw materials into a remarkable piece of public art.

Students at Toledo High School say they wanted to create something that not only showcased their welding skills but also brought the community together in celebration of the fall season. The pumpkin is a symbol of autumn, and they hope it brings a sense of fun to everyone who sees it.

Toledo Superintendent Brennan Bailey praised the students for their hard work and creativity, stating, "This project is a testament to the dedication of our students and the commitment of our staff to fostering a creative and innovative learning environment. We're incredibly proud of what they've accomplished."

In addition to bringing joy to the community, the giant welded pumpkin serves as a reminder of the importance of hands-on learning in schools. It highlights the value of hands-on projects that allow students to apply their knowledge and skills in practical, real-world settings.

As Halloween approaches, Toledo High School is planning to host a special pumpkin lighting event and costume party, during which the giant welded pumpkin will be illuminated for the public to enjoy. It will be held on Friday, Oct. 13,  The event will precede the 7 p.m. Senior Night football game and post-game dance. Admission to the game is $7 for adults and $5 for students, with concessions available featuring hot apple cider.

The giant welded pumpkin sculpture stands as a testament to the power of creativity and teamwork. It has certainly brought the Toledo High School community closer together during this festive season, reminding everyone that teamwork can enrich the lives of those who create it and inspire all who experience it.
