Various Oregon politicians made appearances at “No Kings” rallies across the state Saturday.
U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden visited Gresham and The Dalles. Oregon Secretary of State Tobias Read was in Beaverton and Tigard.
And Gov. Tina Kotek spoke outside the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, where marchers gathered before walking across the Burnside Bridge to join demonstrators in Tom McCall Waterfront Park.
Here’s what Gov. Tina Kotek said, in a transcript from her office:
“Look at this crowd. This is what Oregon looks like. And I am so proud to be your governor and to be standing right here with all of you today.
We are here because we believe that no one is above the law. No one gets to be a king. Not in Oregon, and not in America.
Donald Trump has spent the last year testing that belief. He has unlawfully sent troops into American cities, tried to rip away families’ health care and food assistance, and unleashed chaos and violence that has left folks in our community afraid to leave their own homes.
He is not just wrong. He is dangerous. And we are here today to say: We support the Constitution of the United States of America. We stand up for democracy and rule of law. And we will not back down.
When President Trump tried to send the Oregon National Guard into Portland, we said absolutely not. We took to the streets, peacefully and powerfully. We went to the courts. And the troops went home.
When his administration cut off the food assistance that 750,000 Oregonians depend on, we fought him in the courts. And when the court said release the money, we made sure those benefits were in people’s pockets the next morning.
That is what it means to fight for Oregon.
President Trump has gone after unions and working people. He’s handed tax cuts to billionaires while threatening the programs working families depend on.
But here in Oregon — we believe health care is a right. We believe in making sure families have affordable housing and affordable child care. We believe in lifting up all communities — because we all rise together.
Because when working people win, Oregon wins.
Oregon is a welcoming state — that is not a slogan, it is our choice. Our immigrant and refugee neighbors are our coworkers, our small business owners, our friends. And what Trump is doing is an attack on all of us.
We refused to hand over Oregon voters’ information to ICE. We were in the courts fighting back at every turn. And as long as I am governor, Oregon will not yield.
Thank you for being here today. Thank you for raising your voices.
We don’t win alone. We win together — loud, relentless and unstoppable. This is about the Oregon we hand to the next generation. An Oregon where every community is valued, every worker is respected, every family has a home, and no one gets to be a king. Keep fighting! Thank you!"
