A slope stabilization project on state Route 109 through Hoquiam in Grays Harbor County will close the road round the clock for three weeks beginning March 22, the state Department of Transportation announced.

A 13-mile detour will be set up as part of the project, but transportation officials warn it could add up to 30 minutes of travel time for those driving through the area.

The detour will access Powell Road, Ocean Beach Road and US 101, according to DOT.

Transportation officials also point out that traffic will be slowed before the full closure so that crews can bring in equipment, signs and fencing on March 20 and March 21.

The preliminary work will take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on those dates, according to DOT.

The limestone hillside above SR 109 has a history of debris slides.
