With increasingly cool weather and recent precipitation across the region, fire managers for the Gifford Pinchot National Forests have rescinded public use fire restrictions, effective Sept. 18.
The change applies across the forest, including wilderness areas and recreation sites. Campfires are once again permitted. However, even with lower fire risk, visitors are asked to continue to practice safe fire habits: never leave a campfire unattended and make sure it is completely extinguished until it is cold to the touch.

“Even with the recent rain, we’re still very much in fire season,” said Dirk Shupe, fire staff officer for the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. “A warming, drying trend is anticipated in the coming week, and vegetation can dry out quickly. It’s critical that people remain vigilant and do their part to prevent wildfires.”
Fire danger in the forest currently remains at “high,” and the Industrial Fire Precaution Level (IFPL) is at Level 1 across all zones. Visitors are encouraged to stay updated on changing conditions and any future restrictions. For the latest information, visit https://tinyurl.com/5n7d9pcc.
