Four wins push Bearcats to runner-up finish

A lifetime best from distance runner Ashlen Gruginski and jumper Trinity Gist fueled the W.F. West High School girls track and field team scored 83.5 points to finish as the second best team at Saturday’s Timberwolf Invite held at Heritage High School.

Gruginski ran 11:45.99 to win the 3,200-meter run while Gist leaped just over 16 feet to claim the long jump. Gist, alongside Aspen Gist, Raya Jensen and Emily Mallonee placed second in the 1,600-meter relay.



Mallonee ran a new season-best time of 50.11 seconds to secure the 300 hurdles while Amanda Bennett tossed the javelin 122-09 to win while also placing second in the pole vault.

The Bearcat boys placed fifth with 58.5 points and 20 of them came from hurdler Hayden Niemi, breaking his previous best in the 300 hurdles with a time of 41.34 seconds and he also won the 110 hurdles for a sweep. Three others – Carson Smith (shot put), Charles Lawson (discus) and Peyton Santiago (javelin) – all placed second.
