W.F. West alum Brady Calkins qualified for the U.S. Open for the second time in his career earlier this week, shooting a 68 and a 69 to finish 7-under across two rounds at the Wine Valley Golf Club in Walla Walla to claim one of two qualifying spots.
Calkins finished second in Walla Walla, one shot behind Matt Vogt of Indianapolis.
The process of qualifying for the U.S. Open as an amateur is a daunting one. After a golfer lowers their handicap to 0.4 or under, they need to advance through an 18-hole local qualifier to earn a spot in the 36-hole qualifier, where Calkins just took second.
In 2023, more than 10,000 golfers attempted to qualify, and in 2024, more than 9,900 tried. Less than 100 made it through.
It’s the second time that he’s made the Open in the last four years. In 2022, he competed at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, shooting a 76 and 73 across two rounds before missing the cut.
The 125th U.S. Open will take place from June 12-15 at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania.
