Five things to watch at annual Chehalis Activators

Posted

The annual Chehalis Activators Classic is set to return to W.F. West High School this weekend, and there will be no shortage of area talent heading to Chehalis on Friday and Saturday.

Here are five things, among many, to keep an eye on at this year’s event.

Bennett going for girls javelin three-peat

W.F. West’s Amanda Bennett will be aiming for her second state title later this spring, but first, she can earn her third straight win at the Activators with a strong performance this weekend.

Bennett won the event with a throw of 123 feet, six inches two years ago, and a similar throw of 122 feet, seven inches won it last year.

Her best heave of this season so far has been 122 feet, nine inches, and a similar toss would likely be enough to secure the three-peat.

Rainier and Tumwater headline girls teams

Arguably the top two girls teams in the area will both be in attendance, as Rainier and Tumwater will make the trip south.

Among the headliners for the Mountaineers is Madison Ingram, who won the 3,200 meter by nearly 90 seconds last spring, and Acacia Murphy, who has finished in the top five in the 100 in both of the past two seasons.

Tumwater’s Alexandra Broome is looking to repeat as the 800- and 1,600-meter champion, and Amahle Foster and Kamryn Wilson are looking to build on top-6 finishes in the long jump.

MWP duo looking to make waves in distance races

Morton-White Pass’ Hunter Brackett and Vanson Armstrong have both gotten off to strong starts this spring, and they’ll both be in the mix in the distance races.

Brackett, a senior, recently posted a PR in the 800, and his season best in the 1,600 would put him in contention for a top-three finish.

Armstrong, a junior, is in a similar spot in the 1,600 if he can match his personal best from the District 4 Championships last spring.

Harris, Peck set for showdown in boys javelin

Black Hills’ Ezra Harris placed fifth at the Activators meet last season with a throw of just under 142 feet.

He’s improved since then, posting a toss of 158 feet, five inches earlier this season at Centralia. That mark is the seventh-best across all of 2A so far this spring, and it’s a distance that would’ve put him in second last season.

He’ll be in contention with the actual second-place finisher from last year, Rainier’s Zander Peck.

He’s also added more than 10 feet to his throw from last spring, and his season best mark of 169 feet, 10 inches is the 15th best so far across all classifications in the state.

Sancho and Dickinson headline 2B sprinters

Winlock’s Victoria Sancho and Napavine Maddie Dickinson both landed in the top-5 in the 200-meter dash at last year’s event, and both are expected to be in the mix again this spring.

Sancho clocked a time of 27.65 seconds to finish second in 2024, but she clocked a sub-27 time earlier this season at the Rainier Icebreaker, a time that would have won last year by more than three-tenths of a second.

She’s also posted a sub-13 100-meter time, a time that would have won last year’s event.

Dickinson finished in the top seven in both the 100 and 200 last season, and she went on to finish in the top 10 at both events in the state meet.
