With the annual Onalaska Apple Harvest Festival set to kick off this Thursday and continue through Sunday, the firefighters and paramedics at Lewis County Fire District (LCFD) 1 are preparing to host a number of events during the festival as well.

It’s all free to attend.

Once the Apple Harvest Festival parade, starting at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, finally ends, the doors of the LCFD 1 fire station will be open to the public until 3 p.m., according to LCFD 1 Assistant Fire Chief Laura Lee Krause.

The LCFD 1 fire station is located at 1733 state Route 508 in Onalaska.

“The smokehouse will be going. We’ll have a firefighter’s challenge course. We have duck races at 12:30, 1:30 and 2:30 (p.m.), and we have demonstrations on prescribed burning at one and two o'clock," Krause said in a phone call with The Chronicle on Monday, Sept. 28.

The “duck races” won’t involve live ducks, but will be a child-friendly water slide track where local youths can race rubber duckies against each other for prizes.

Other games and prize drawings will be held as well.

She added staff from the Lewis County 911 Communications dispatch office will have a booth set up at the fire station, along with staff and volunteers from LCFD 1 and the Onalaska Volunteer Firefighters Association on hand to answer questions.
