Fire destroys ticket booth at closed drive-in theater

One final remnant from the long-closed Twin City Drive In theater burned to the ground Wednesday night, leaving behind only charred timbers in its spot.

The old ticket booth, a wooden building about 10 feet square, was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived after the 9:45 p.m. call.

The building, which also used to contain the theater's projection booth, was located on the west side of South Gold Street in Centralia.

Police classified the fire as an arson. Firefighter Capt. Mike Davidson said there was a possibility that transients had been staying there.

"In the past they've stayed there," Davidson said, recalling two fire calls to the building in the past.

The theater opened in about 1933 and has been shut down for many years, but the remains of the screen still exist.

A Hoodsport man bought the huge metal Twin City Drive In sign about a year ago out of nostalgic interest.

Firefighters were at the scene until almost midnight, Davidson said. Nobody was injured.

Centralia police noted that there is no power source into the building, a fact that tends to add suspicion a fire was set by a person.
