Fifty Years Back: Wrecking up north

1973 WEEK 7: Family Matters, more history in Pe Ell

Posted

The way the Black Hills League schedule shaped up, both Chehalis and Centralia were due for trips to Thurston County in the same week, and the Twin Cities ended up making the most of their doubleheader, with the Bearcats coming back to beat Timberline 32-21 and the Tigers running roughshod over North Thurston 33-0.

Chehalis trailed by two points at halftime, but the deficit didn’t last long out of the break. The Cats took the ball to start the third quarter, quickly moved into Timberline territory, and took the lead on a 25-yard run by Joe Blaser and a Doug Hitchcock two-point conversion.

On the ensuing kickoff, Timberline fumbled the ball away, and Mike Sturza pounced on it. Two plays later, Hitchcock was running 10 yards into the end zone to give Chehalis some insurance.

Timberline managed to keep ahold of the ball for a full possession but went three-and-out, and this time, Chehalis only needed one play, as Blaser found Gary Elder for a 52-yard score to make it 32-14 before the crowd had gotten fully settled back in its seats after halftime.

But while Chehalis waited until the second half to make its blitz, Centralia had no such patience. Tom Hartman racked up 90 of his 189 rushing yards in the first quarter, and the Tigers got the rout on early, outgaining the Rams 508-129 when it was all said and done.

Kicking? In This Economy?

Going up against cellar-dwellers Wishkah — a short-staffed team made even more so by the fact that a judge had recently ruled that three girls who had signed up for the squad weren’t allowed to play football — Pe Ell ran up a 27-0 lead after just a quarter of play. Before the Trojans pulled their starters, coach Bill Berg opted for a bit of history, sending out his field goal team in the second quarter.

Lance McCoy promptly drilled his 26-yard attempt, hitting the first field goal in Pe Ell history.

Volleyball!

Mixed into the week’s football previews was a rare bit of volleyball news reported in the Chronicle. On Oct. 16, 1973, Onalaska wrapped up its South Central League title, sweeping Rochester 15-11, 15-7.

Statline of the Week

Winlock’s Steve McGraw did it all in the Cardinals’ 30-8 win over Mossyrock, logging two rushing touchdowns, a pick-six, and a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

Quotable

“It’s not fun coaching against your kid.” — Toledo coach Ted Hippi after a 19-0 win over Rochester, coached by his son Rob Hippi in what may have been the first father/son coaching matchup in state history.
