A pitcher’s duel between two of the best arms in Class 2A was center stage for nine-plus innings, but Zoe Fields had the final spotlight with a walk-off two-run double to give the Thunderbirds a 4-2, 10-inning triumph over Aberdeen at home on Wednesday night.
In a showdown between the last two unbeatens in the Evergreen Conference, Tumwater (6-1, 4-0 EvCo) stands alone at the top plus increased the winning streak to six. It needed every last bit of breaks in a game that was 1-1 after seven and 2-2 after nine.
Marissa La Praim started the 10th on second, and Brielle Womach moved her to third with a double. Erika Schock executed a bunt single to load the bases. After a fielder’s choice got the lead runner out at home, Fields’ lone hit was the game winner that ignited a celebration.
Tumwater’s Ella Ferguson and Aberdeen’s Lilly Camp combined for 29 strikeouts and battled around double digit walks and hits allowed total. For the T-Birds, they grabbed an early 1-0 lead on a Jaime Haase solo home run. Schock endowed the night with two hits for Tumwater.
Wednesday kicked off four straight at home for the T-Birds that will continue on Friday versus W.F. West.
