A Centralia man and his adult daughter were jailed Sunday, Sept. 20, after a woman’s phone was stolen and she was left bloodied by a children’s bicycle that was thrown at her.
Elena Darlene Jaimes, 20, and Jose David Jaimes-Cruz, 43, both made their initial appearances in Lewis County Superior Court from the Lewis County Jail on Monday, Sept. 21.
Jaimes is charged with second-degree assault (domestic violence), a class B felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine. Jaimes-Cruz is charged with first-degree theft (domestic violence), which is also a class B felony.
Judge Paul Strophy set bail at $10,000 for Jaimes and $2,500 for Jaimes-Cruz.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, Centralia police responded to the 1000 block of North Tower Avenue when a 911 caller requested an ambulance before the call was disconnected.
When they arrived at the scene, police found a woman being treated by medics for a head injury. Her teenage son assisted her in communicating with the officers, as she only spoke Spanish. She was holding a T-shirt to her head as blood rolled down her face, according to court documents.
She told officers she and Jaimes-Cruz, who lives with her and was in a relationship with her, had been arguing all day when Jaimes-Cruz took her phone. His daughter, Jaimes, threw a children’s bicycle at her, striking her in the head, she said.
The laceration on her head was about an inch wide and “oval in appearance,” according to court documents. The victim said Jaimes-Cruz snatched the phone out of her hand when she tried to call a friend to pick her up.
“She said Jose’s daughter, Elena Jaimes, then threw a bicycle at her head, causing the injury,” according to court documents.
Jaimes-Cruz told officers the victim had been “acting crazy toward him” and that he took the phone to “teach her a lesson.”
Jaimes said her father and the victim were arguing on the porch of the home when she heard the woman threaten to call police on Jaimes-Cruz. That’s when she threw the bike. There were blood droplets on the porch as police investigated, according to court documents. The injury appeared to have been caused by the handlebar portion of the bike, which was broken on the porch.
The victim was transported to a hospital, where her wound required stitches, according to court documents.
Neither suspect has substantial criminal history.
Both will appear in Lewis County Superior Court Thursday for arraignment. They each posted bail and were released from jail Monday.
