Exploding Semi Tire in Grand Mound Mistaken as Propane Explosion

What was initially reported as a fire in a truck carrying propane in Grand Mound Tuesday turned out to be overheated brakes and an exploding tire, according to the West Thurston Fire Authority.

Fire crews received a report of a possible fire involving a propane truck at 8:57 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of U.S. Highway 12 and Old Highway 99 in Grand Mound and feared the worst, Capt. Lanette Dyer told The Chronicle.

The report triggered a county-wide response. However, when crews arrived, they found reports of an explosion were not totally accurate.

“There was really no excitement though we all thought there was,” Dyer said.

In reality, one of the propane truck’s brakes got too hot and popped its right rear inner dually tire, she said.

A person on the scene put out what remained of the brake fire with a fire extinguisher, she said.
