Elk have taken over the streets of Cannon Beach.
Herds of Roosevelt elk are a relatively common sight around the north Oregon coast town, especially in the fall and winter, when the big animals can be spotted lounging in the dunes, fighting on the beach or frolicking in the sand near Haystack Rock.
The best time to look for elk is around dawn or dusk, according to the Cannon Beach Chamber of Commerce, which promotes elk watching as a tourist activity. The best places to see them around town are typically the local meadows, creeks and parks.
Or you might just see them stampeding through town.
A video posted to social media Tuesday by Salty Raven, a gift shop in downtown Cannon Beach, shows a herd of at least six elk running through a commercial district on South Hemlock Street in what called the shop called a “mini stampede.”
Responses to the post, almost all variations of “wow!” or “whoa!”, underline the celebrity status of the local elk, and their continued power to impress their human neighbors. Will we ever get tired of the Cannon Beach elk? Not likely.
