Eagle Scout Provides Flag Retirement Drop Box for West Thurston Fire Stations

A local Boy Scout has provided South Thurston County residents with a new way to dispose of American flags that are ready for retirement.

According to the West Thurston Fire Authority, United States flag retirement drop boxes have been built at the authority’s Rochester and Littlerock stations by Jacob Zipperer.

Zipperer, a member of Rochester Boy Scouts Troop 9317, completed the project as he worked to attain the title of Eagle Scout.

“Now you can drop off your tired U.S. flags and your ballot at the same time,” West Thurston Fire wrote on Facebook, later adding. “Thank you, Jacob!”

According to the United States Flag Code, flags should be retired when they are in such condition that they are "no longer a fitting emblem for display" and should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning it.

One of the requirements to become an Eagle Scout is to plan, develop and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to any religious institution, school or community.
