A driver fleeing a police traffic stop died in a crash in Beaverton early Saturday morning, officials said.

Officers first spotted the driver, whose name hasn’t been released, “driving recklessly” shortly after 2 a.m. on Burnside Street near Northwest 8th Avenue in downtown Portland, the Portland Police Bureau said in a statement. They pulled the car over, but then the driver sped away, heading west on Burnside.

The Police Bureau said the officers followed but turned off their overhead lights in hopes the driver would slow down and stop driving dangerously.

Police soon spotted the driver again, on Southwest Barnes Road at 87th Avenue, in Beaverton, “driving normally,” officials said.

Once again, police attempted a traffic stop, but the driver made an abrupt U-turn and raced away. The officers turned their car around but did not give chase, police said.

They came upon the crashed car at Barnes Road and Valeria View Drive, police said. The driver – the only person in the car – was dead.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash. Anyone with information about the case is asked to send an email to crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov.
