A person died in a fiery car crash after fleeing a traffic stop on Monday night, police say.

The Portland Police Bureau said in a statement that Port of Portland officers tried to stop the driver — whom police haven’t identified — near Northeast Prescott Street and 116th Avenue around 11:20 p.m.

The driver sped off, police say. Officers didn’t pursue the vehicle, but police tracked it until they eventually lost sight of the car as it drove east near Northeast Fremont Street from Northeast 112th Avenue.

Police added that the car had its headlights off.

Shortly after, emergency dispatchers got a call about a burning car near the intersection of Northeast 124th Avenue and Fremont Street, police say.

Police identified the burning car as the one that had fled, and found that the crash had launched the driver out of the car. Officers tried to save the driver, who died at the scene.

Investigators said they believe the driver crashed after hitting a parked car.

The incident is under investigation, and police ask anyone with information to email crimetips@police.portlandoregon and reference Portland police case 26-4796.
