A 40-year-old Arlington man who crashed into another car while allegedly under the influence on Feb. 18 has died at the hospital.
Corey P. Thornton was driving south in the northbound lanes of I-5 near Joint Base Lewis-McChord at about 3:50 a.m in his 2001 Acura. At the same time, two people from Puyallup were headed north in their 2011 Nissan Titan. Troopers say they crashed in the area of Berkeley Street because Thornton was driving the wrong way, according to a Washington State Patrol news release.
A woman who was a passenger in the Nissan died at Madigan Army Medical Center on JBLM. She was identified as Angelica Roberto Campos, 52, of Puyallup. The driver, a 48-year-old Puyallup man, was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma.
A GoFundMe was set up on Feb. 20 to help Campos' family with funeral costs and other expenses. She was described as a caring and loving person.
"She was so energetic and full of life because she was such a visionary person always aspiring, looking for the next goal she wanted to accomplish," the fundraiser said.
Campos leaves behind her husband, two sons, one daughter and nine grandkids who "all loved her very much." She also leaves behind family in Mexico, the fundraiser said.
Thornton was injured and taken to Madigan Army Medical Center. He recently died from his injuries. Before his death, Thornton was accused of vehicular homicide and driving under the influence, which allegedly resulted in the crash, a WSP news release said.
