Dozens dine and get a taste of Spain at Ox Centralia’s first pop-up catering event

More than 40 guests purchased tickets to Ox Centralia’s first pop-up catering event on Saturday at the Centralia Square Annex.

Held by Ox Centralia owners Samuel and Irene Cots Trevino, the event was titled Barceloneta Tapas & Pours and featured six courses of Spanish cuisine inspired by the La Barceloneta neighborhood on the Balearic Sea coast in Barcelona, Spain, where Samuel was born and raised.

Guests were greeted by Irene along with a photo tapestry featuring mosaic tile artwork done by famous Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi overlooking La Barceloneta.

And instead of being seated at individual tables, Samuel elected to have his guests sit at communal tables and encouraged them to get to know one another.

“Tables are family style as they are in Spain. We share tables with other people, we share experiences,” Samuel said. “This is not a common (dining) experience where you’re expected to be out of the door in 30 minutes. Enjoy your time here, relax, we’ll have a couple hours of eating and talking.”

Aside from being raised in Barcelona, Samuel studied the culinary arts at the Hofmann Culinary School of Barcelona, also working at the Restaurant Follia and L’Olivera, both in the Spanish coastal city.

Guests enjoyed samplings of Spanish wines and beer paired with their meals — along with getting to sample various assortments of Spanish seafood, both canned and freshly prepared, cured Spanish pork shoulder and chorizo, a variety of both meat filled and vegetable tapas and more.

Currently, Samuel and Irene are planning to host more catering pop-up events to grow their catering business as renovations continue to what they hope will be a rentable catering event center and eventual dine-in location for Ox Centralia at the former Boccata space in downtown Centralia.
