Renowned jazz artist Dmitri Matheny and his band will appear at The Juice Box Public House in downtown Centralia from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, for a performance.

The performance, part of a national tour, will feature Michael Brockman on saxophones, Joe Bagg on piano, Phil Sparks on bass, Michael Raynor on drums and the leader Dmitri Matheny on flugelhorn, in an evening of classics from the shared history of jazz and cinema, according to a news release from Matheny.

Jazz renditions to be performed include selections from familiar cinematic favorites such as “An Affair To Remember,” “Blade Runner,” “Casablanca,” “Chinatown,” “Taxi Driver,” “The Godfather,” “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” “Mo Better Blues,” “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery,” “Young Frankenstein,” “Star Wars,” “Barbie” and more.

“We might even play a TV theme or two!” Matheny stated in the release.

“An all-star jazz band featuring some of the most accomplished musicians in the western United States,” writes All About Jazz, “the Dmitri Matheny Group is a cohesive and seamless unit, serving up equal parts soulful expression, caressing phrases, imaginative asides, and dedicated lyricism.”

Matheny, based in Centralia since 2014, has been lauded as “one of the most emotionally expressive improvisers of his generation” by the International Review of Music.

He’s also gathered a loyal international following, releasing 12 albums and touring extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. The San Francisco Chronicle calls Matheny “one of the jazz world’s most talented horn players.”

The Dmitri Matheny Group presents over 100 concerts on tour each year. This is their second appearance at The Juice Box following a sold-out show last May.

Admission is $10 and $15 for this all ages show.
