CVL outlook: Pe Ell, Oakville in the mix in Columbia Valley

Posted

Both the Pe Ell and Oakville boys made the district tournament after successful regular seasons last season, but both the Trojans and Acorns went 0-2 at district to fall short of state.

Both teams should be in the mix again this winter, as both teams return key playmakers.

Gio Rodas is back in the mix in Oakville, as is Lewis Koser, Lamont Roane, and James Shields, a group that helped lead the Acorns to eight wins a year ago.

It’s a similar situation in Pe Ell, where Blake Nelson, Eli Mason, Mo Morales, Liam McGrath, and Blaine Howard all return with experience from last year’s nine-win squad.

Senior Kohl Perkins and sophomore Wyatt Harris are also expected to step into bigger roles this year, and if everything can come together as planned, Pe Ell coach Ross Hojem is hopeful that the Trojans can be “one of the big dogs” in a talented Columbia Valley League.

The Pe Ell girls are coming off an incredibly successful season, one in which they won 21 games, a league title, and their first district title in 12 years en route to a trip to Spokane.

They have everyone but Brookelynn King, last year’s lone senior, and Emma Kissner (now at Adna) back, including Karli Phelps, Madi Engel, and Peyton Zock.

The Oakville girls are also coming off a successful 2024-25 campaign, one where the Acorns won 12 games, but there will be a little more turnover.

Four seniors from last year’s crew are gone, and there are no seniors on the roster for this season.

Instead, it’ll be a group of five juniors — Brenna Moore, Susie Klatush, Damia Tartios, Ui’lani Siufanua, and Ava Boyd — leading the way, as well as freshman Riyah Filitaula and sophomore Naenae Filitaula, who both extended time a year ago.
