Corner kicks do the trick for Centralia

The Centralia girls soccer team got what it needed from set pieces Thursday, scoring two goals from corner kicks in the second half to beat Shelton 2-0.

“I’m happy that we were able to capitalize on set pieces,” first-year Centralia coach Luis Magana Reyna said.

The first goal for the Tigers (8-4, 6-3 2A EvCo) came off a cross from Jaslin Corona which turned into a scrum in the box that Anahi Corona finally bludgeoned home. Shortly after that, Centralia won another corner, that Olivia Gruginski delivered in and Alia Gomez put home.

The two goals rewarded Centralia for a night spent largely in the attacking third, though when Shelton did get a couple of chances to break on the counter attack, the Tigers’ defense cleared things up — or Braylee Blankenship made the save.

“Our defense played well today, and so did our keeper to keep the clean sheet,” Magana Reyna said.

Centralia will be back in action Tuesday for the second leg of the Chronicle Cup, at W.F. West. The Tigers beat the Bearcats in a penalty shootout on Sept. 21, giving them a goal’s advance in the two-game competition.
